Our Goal

The two-week Elementary Summer Learning program is designed to support students who would benefit from targeted literacy and numeracy interventions and to help build confidence towards the next school year. New curriculum will not be introduced; rather, the focus will be on solidifying concepts that have already been presented.

Who Is This Program For?

Students are referred to the two-week Elementary Summer Learning Program by their classroom teacher or Learning Support Teacher (LST) or Principal in consultation with the school team and families. Your child may be a good candidate for an Elementary Summer Learning referral if they:

  • Are demonstrating "Developing" proficiency in Language Arts and/or Numeracy
  • May benefit from additional time to strengthen key skills and build confidence through skills that they have already been working on
  • Can work independently to participate in classroom activities and are able to follow directions given by a teacher

Important Things to Know

  • All student referrals must be approved by a school administrator before registration is confirmed.
  • If a student has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and/or a Student Support Plan (SSP), and is currently receiving additional supports at their school, we encourage you to have conversations with your child's Principal as early as possible in the spring to determine if this program could be beneficial for your child and/or confirm if it meets your child's needs.
  • While the program offers literacy and numeracy interventions, it is not intended as an intensive program requiring significantly modified curriculum.
  • There is no before or after school supervision. Parent/Guardians must ensure that drop-off and pick-up is prompt in order to ensure safety of students.
  • Class rosters may change during the first week as student registration numbers can change (increase/decrease). Classes may be combined, separated, and/or re-organized.

Thinking About Summer Learning for Your Child?

  • Referral decisions are always made collaboratively, with careful consideration of each student's strengths, needs and long-term goals. If your child was not referred and you feel they would benefit from the Elementary Summer Learning Program, please speak with your school’s Principal, who can help you determine whether the program may be beneficial for your child (as a "self-referral").
  • If our Summer Learning program does not meet your child's goals or if you would like other ways to prevent summer learning loss (“summer slide”), parent resources and learning activities are available on the Summer Learning website to support continued learning at home and also in the community.
